groups rebel against john boehner. i believe it was just the last battle over the bush tax cuts, the headline was trying to herd cats referring to speaker boehner trying to get his party in line over the battle here. how much pressure is speaker boehner under? does he have real allies at this point, since it seems he's being pulled in multiple directions here? >> speaker boehner is under enormous pressure, and if he needed to have this vote with just his own caucus or conference, he wouldn't be able to get it done. to the vote in the house, i think for every -- i think there's more tom coles there than we know that won't speak up. >> why won't they speak up? are they waiting to see the next round of back and forth? >> well, that could be part of it, but also, they're a little bit concerned about what their constituents are going to say. they don't want their e-mail box bombarded by the heritage foundation. now you see two extreme views. i think you'll end up at the trillion dollar mark, and i think that speaker boehner will need a lot of of democrats but i think he'll get them i

an hour. earlier today geithner met behind closed doors with house speaker john boehner, senate majority leader harry reid and frank mcconnell. the word he used to describe the overall negotiations, disappointing. >> no substantive progress has been made in the talks between the white house and the house over the last two weeks. listen, this is not a game. jobs are on the line. the american economy is on the line. and this is a moment for adult leadership. campaign style rallies and one-sided leaks in the press are not the way to get things done here in washington. >> democrats today said they're confident a deal can be reached by christmas. but admit negotiations would need to pick up steam. as for senator reid, he says it's now up to the gop to make the next move. >> we're still waiting for a serious offer from the republicans. the president has made his proposal. we need a proposal from them. >> okay. let's dig in and bring in nbc's capitol hill correspondent kelly o'donnell. fill us in on how the meetings are going so far. last but not least, nancy pelosi coming up. >> exactly. she'l

to john boehner is, let's go over the cliff. that we can live with the sequester and we absolutely will not raise tax rates no matter what. what that does is eliminate all of the tax cuts and then there's a new fight in january to push obviously by the democrats to restore tax cuts for 98% of americans. and then that will be muddied by the need for a debt ceiling increase and the fight goes in to february. it's government at the brink all the time. we don't know how the markets and the credit rating agencies will react. probably be bad ybut i think that's what you hear conservatives saying. >> erin, so far wall street for the most part reacting in a calm fashion. we know that could go out the window. no one knows what could happen and how long it would take for us to fall in to a recession. but with that said, our first read team points out you have to know when to hold 'em, when to fold 'em. the song, i'm a texan. he's a texan. did we see this coming all along to see a split dealing with the tax cuts first and then kicking the can as you heard congressman yarmuth say down the road
